Intern - LNG analyst

2020.09.03

Synopsis

Mercuria’s European Natural Gas Desk has a track record of strong performance based on robust supply and demand fundamentals analysis in an ever-evolving market. As the use of LNG becomes more widespread we’re seeing increasing globalisation of gas prices, in turn increasing the geographic reach our analysis requires. As a result we’re seeking to bolster our research efforts to add more detail and coverage to our input assumptions and forecasting models, and the aim of the placement will be to make well-considered, automatable extensions to our analysis suite.

Responsibilities

  • In-depth research and data mining for supply and demand fundamentals in specific LNG importing countries, using a variety of public domain and subscription resources to identify the pertinent data series within a large potential dataset
  • Converting this research into forecasts and projections based on both quantitative and qualitative inputs, ensuring these are well-documented and can be refreshed/updated on a continuous basis
  • Liaison with our database team to onboard new data sources and improve the reports we provide to our traders
  • Analysis of price relationships between hubs and between LNG and other commodities, particularly where competition between different fuel types is relevant
  • Sitting alongside our Geneva-based gas and power analysts, good communication with the gas, LNG and coal desks in Geneva, London and Houston will also be needed

Required Skills

  • Numerical individual with ability to source, verify, analyse and integrate large volumes of data
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel (VBA would be a plus)
  • Coding skills (C# and/or Python) would also be an advantage
  • Basic understanding of energy markets and interest to learn more
  • Fluent English speaker with strong communication skills
  • Able to deliver a coherent narrative on complex topics
  • Keen to learn, not afraid to ask questions
  • Ability to work autonomously within the team
