Mercuria Celebrates Silvania’s Momentum in Unlocking Nature Finance at Scale

30th June 2025

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Monday 30th June, 2025

Mercuria is proud to see the remarkable progress being made by Silvania, the global natural capital investment platform we co-founded with an initial $500 million commitment. Silvania’s mission to restore the planet’s natural balance through large-scale private investment in nature and biodiversity is gaining significant momentum, as evidenced by its expanding leadership, strengthened partnerships, and impactful initiatives in Brazil.

Under the leadership of newly appointed CEO Eelco Hoekstra, Silvania is entering an exciting new phase of growth. With over three decades of global experience in energy, infrastructure, and sustainability, Hoekstra brings the expertise needed to scale Silvania’s portfolio and accelerate its impact.

Silvania’s work is rooted in collaboration, ensuring that scientific rigor, Indigenous and local knowledge, and community partnerships are central to its approach. A key milestone is its global partnership with Conservation International, announced during London Climate Week, which will help guide the deployment of Silvania’s capital and catalyze additional funding for nature restoration.

Momentum is also building in Brazil, where Silvania is driving transformative initiatives to protect and restore critical ecosystems:

  • A strategic alliance with the Brazilian State of Maranhão to support large-scale forest restoration through the Floresta Viva program.
  • Collaboration with the Brazilian State of Tocantins to develop landscape-scale programs across 28 million hectares, reducing deforestation and safeguarding the Cerrado and Amazon ecosystems.
  • The Race to Belém campaign, in partnership with Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy, which aims to mobilize billions of dollars in private finance for rainforest protection and restoration.

During London Climate Week, Silvania hosted global leaders, including COP30 CEO Ana Toni, at the Natural History Museum to discuss the critical role of nature finance. Guests were inspired by David Attenborough’s “Our Story”, a 360-degree immersive experience supported by Silvania that highlights the importance of biodiversity for a sustainable future.

At Mercuria, we believe that establishing nature investments as an investable asset class is key to unlocking the capital needed to protect and restore nature at scale. We are proud to support Silvania’s groundbreaking work and look forward to seeing its continued impact on the planet’s most vital ecosystems.
